Meeting Minutes

Tuesday evening meeting, 16th. May 2023.

Unfortunately our speaker for the May evening meeting couldn't make it, and Pete Nash stepped in at the last minute with dvd's of track events and traction engines at Hady over the years. We started with a film from 2004 which brought back many memories for longer serving members, and showed a different way of life to the newer ones. It was surprising how many members figured that are no longer with us. At the much larger Open Weekends some years ago, we'd have over 30 traction engines and over an estimated 3500 visitors. The long queues on both tracks were repeated at this years Open days. Years also featured were 2010, 2015 and 2017. Even the latter was six years ago now and of course pre Covid. A great night yet again, including a warm drink for everyone present. The next meeting scheduled for 20th. June will be a talk by Alan Freebury, about building "GOWRIE" from scratch, a 2ft. gauge 0-6-0 articulated Hunslet loco. This is being built in Killamarsh and Pete Nash has arranged a visit to the workshop on Thursday 15th June 10-30am for 15 members. There will be a sheet for names of interested parties on the Clubroom noticeboard in early June.

From Club Chairman Adrian Lloyd...

The club meeting of 18th April at Hady Clubhouse was well attended with 25 members present. Guest speaker was Matthew Smith, who gave us all an insight into AI, or to give its full title, Artificial Intelligence.

The talk outlined what is AI as currently perceived, where its roots began and how it has developed, and continuing to develop, into todays society. Matthew posed many questions during his talk, as to whether AI is a good thing, or perhaps not, and where it might go in the future.
Certainly the points raised could have been debated for hours, depending on one's points of view of such things!

A very thoughtful, well prepared and presented talk and a quite, quite fascinating insight into Mathew's specialist area of study at Sheffield University.

Thank you Matthew.

Following the talk, the Chairman was asked to read a statement from Tom Woods, a club member, regarding a legacy with which he has been able to sponsor membership of new junior members to the club. This is a very generous offer and by sponsoring new blood coming into the club, can only be a good thing. I will provide fuller details of Tom's offer at a later date in the club magazine.

Members running day Saturday 22nd April.

Next Tuesday meeting 16th May.
